Abstract

The invention relates to compounds of the formula <FORM:1022878/C2/1> in which one of the positions marked 1 and 3 is substituted by an alkyl group of 8-18 carbon atoms, the other position being either unsubstituted or substituted by an alkyl group of 1-18 carbon atoms, and X is at least 4.5, the ratio of X to the total number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group(s) in the positions 1 and 3 being at least 0.5. The compounds may be prepared by treating an appropriately substituted phenol with glycidol at 100-200 DEG C., the glycidol being added to the phenol at such a rate that the concentration of glycidol in the phenol does not exceed about 2%. A catalyst may be present, suitably an alkali metal or a hydroxide, alkoxide or phenoxide thereof. The products are stable in concentrated aqueous solutions of inorganic salts and are useful as surfactants and agents for reducing surface tension. Examples and experimental results are given.ALSO:A compound of the formula <FORM:1022878/B1-B2/1> in which one of the positions marked 1 and 3 is substituted by a nonyl group and x is 6 (see Division C2) is used in Example 7 to emulsify orthodichlorobenzene in water.
