Abstract

1,022,424. Piles. RAYMOND INTERNATIONAL Inc. Feb. 3, 1965, No. 4770/65. Heading E1H. A method for introducing concrete into a pile shell 11 (Figs. 1 and 5, not shown), after same has been installed in the earth and which is of such extensive depth that the rock of the concrete mixture, if poured in at the top, would become excessively segregated from the grout by reason of air turbulence in the shell, comprises first forming a compact slug of the concrete mixture at the upper end of the pile shell (by pouring the mixture 12 into a chamber 9), the slug being smaller than the shell in cross-section and being elongated with its lower end as formed at a region spaced from the bottom of the shell by a distance at least several times greater than the length of the slug; then releasing said slug (by opening gate 13 at bottom of chamber 9) and allowing same to drop while it remains as an integral compact mass (as at 14), to the bottom of the shell; and forming and dropping like successive compact slugs until the shell is filled to the desired depth.
