Abstract

A process of refining nickel in which the nickel is electrodeposited upon conductive islands defined upon the surface of a flexible sheet-metal cathode former by interconnecting lines of non-conductive material, the plated former then being removed from the bath and the deposited nickel removed from the former by flexing the said former. The former must be formed of a material on which the nickel will be deposited semi-adherently, e.g. passivated nickel, nickel-chromium alloy or nickel-chromium-iron alloy and are preferably 0.02-0.04 inch thick. The interconnecting lines of non-conductive material are preferably as wide as the desired thickness of nickel to be deposited and may comprise paint, varnish, lacquer, tape &c., suitable materials including epoxy resins, acrylics and polyethylenes. The non-conductive material may be applied to a flat face of the former or to a pattern of depressed interconnecting lines formed in the former. The formers may be inserted in pairs, back to back, in the electroplating bath. The deposited nickel should have an internal tensile stress of less than 5000 p.s.i. which may be obtained by incorporating 0.05-0.5 gr./l. of an aromatic sulpho compound e.g. p-toluene sulphonamide, benzene disulphonic acid, naphthalene trisulphonic acid, saccharin &c.
