Abstract

Magnetic tape consists of a plastic tape substrate first rendered conductive by applying a conductive layer to the substrate by normal methods, and second electroplating a magnetic material thereon, preferably Ni/Co alloy, e.g. from an electrolyte of their complex compounds, e.g. tartrate, or nitrilo-acetate, and applied at low power, e.g. 0.01-20.0 A.S.D. The conductive layer may be nickel, graphite, bronze, copper, silver or aluminium in powder form, and applied by vapour deposition, suspended in a binder or emulsion, or blown on to the tape coated with adhesives. Binders specified include polyvinyl compounds, poly-acrylates, or other esters. The Ni/Co deposition is improved by adding salts of alkalis or alkaline earth metals, and the magnetic properties are improved by including small amounts of metals of Group Va, VI, or VII. An apparatus is shown in which the tape bearing a conductive layer is cleaned and etched before plating in a bath with the usual rollers. In examples, the plating baths are (1) nickel and cobalt citrates and lithium chloride, (2) nickel citrate and chloride, and cobalt sulphamate, (3) cobalt tetra-acetate, cobalt chloride, nickel citrate, manganous sulphate, and ethylene diamine. Power applied is 2-4 volts at 0.5-1.0 A.S.D. A magnetic field may be applied during electro-deposition.
