Abstract
1,020,891. Electro-photographic development. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 37074/62. Heading G2H. A charge image on a dielectric material is developed by exposing the material to a vapour which softens and deforms the material in accordance with the charge pattern. In the embodiment shown, a web 10 of dielectric material is fed from a reel 44 past a negative charging station 48 and round part of a photo-conductive drum 50 carrying a charge image formed on its surface by exposure to an original 60 after being positively charged by corona device 52. Another drum 68, the surface of which is kept at a predetermined potential aids the formation of a charge image on the web which is then fed through a developing chamber 16<SP>1</SP> and a fixing chamber 16<SP>11</SP> and on to a reel 46. A lamp 71 removes residual charges from the drum 50. The developing chamber is supplied with material softening vapour from a liquid bath 20 in which a heater 26 is placed. A blast of air from a blower 28 condenses the excess vapour in the fixing chamber and hardens the deformed and softened material. The dielectric material may be polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylidine, ethylcellulose or styrene coated polyethylene glycol terephthalate. The material softening vapour may be trichlorethylene, acetone, toluene or methylene chloride.
