Abstract
941,559. Electrophotography. KALLE A. G. July 8, 1960 [July 14, 1959] No.23934/60. Heading G2H. [Also in Division H1] A negative image of a master is produced by the following steps. A conductive plate coated with photoconductive material containing or coated with a natural or synthetic wax (see Division H1) is uniformly charged in the dark by corona discharge from a device maintained at 6000-7000 volts. The coating is then exposed behind a master or an episcopic or diascopic image of the master projected on it to produce an electrostatic image, which is developed by contact with a developer consisting of a carrier and toner charged to the same polarity as the image. Fine uncoated or resin coated glass balls, iron powder, starch or plastic balls, and crystals of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium sulphate, anthracene, fluorene and indene are suitable carriers. The toner consists of pigmented resin or a mixture of resin and carbon black. A typical developer consists of 100 parts by weight fine glass balls and 2.5 parts of a toner obtained by melting together, grinding and screening to a particle size of 20-50 Á, 30 parts of polystyrene, 30 parts of maleinate resin, and 3 parts of carbon black. The image is fixed by infra-red heating or by treatment with ethyl alcohol, trichoroethylene, carbon tetrachloride or steam. Alternatively the image is made into a printing plate by wiping with a suitable solvent, e.g. 5% monoethanolamine, 5% diethanolamine, 10% glycerine, 5% sodium silicate and 75% by weight polyethyleneglycol,or an aqueous alkaline developer, rinsing in water and inking with greasy ink. If the support plate is transparent the image may be used as master for further copying. When a translucent support is used the image can be produced thereon by the reflex process.
