A laterally pleated plastics bag is formed by cutting a portion 21 from a pleated tube and heat sealing the bottom end of the portion, and partially heat sealing the upper end to define a filling aperture 25. The filling aperture is closed either by heat sealing or by a plastics clip. The side pleats may be connected by diagonal welds 27-34 (Fig. 1, not shown).
