A gear pump, or motor, comprises a housing 1 (Fig. 1, not shown) containing a closed gear-train which includes an even number of at least four gear-wheels 2, 4, 11, an end cover 1<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 2, not shown) on the housing being provided with bores 18, 20 for the flow of liquid to, or from, spaces 14, 19 within and surrounding the gear-train, respectively. Gearwheels 11 are rotatably mounted on pins 10 attached to a pressure-loaded plate 8 which is fixed to rotatable shaft 13 carrying a lever 12, whereas gear-wheel 3 is attached to a driving, or output, shaft 3 and gear-wheel 4 is rotatably mounted on a fixed stub-shaft 5. In operation, plate 8 is rotated through a small angle in either direction by movement of lever 12 to displace gear-wheels 11 relative to gear-wheels 3, 4 and regulate the rate of flow of liquid between the meshing gear-teeth, the net rate of flow from one of said spaces to the other being dependent on the extent and direction of displacement of gear-wheels 11. Plate 8 has an extension 8<SP>1</SP> which slidably engages a recess 7 in cover 1<SP>1</SP> and is pressed against the side faces of the gear-wheels by the resultant pressure of liquid acting on surfaces 8<SP>11</SP>, 8<SP>111</SP>, the area of these surfaces being greater than the area of the plate exposed to the pressure of liquid between the meshing gear-teeth. Alternatively, pins 10 may be fixed in the housing, a pressure-loaded plate similar to plate 8 being lodged on one or both sides of the gear-wheels.
