Fluid-impermeable barriers are formed in the type of cable having a plastic sheath covering plastic insulated conductors by applying local heat to the cable sufficient to melt the sheath and insulation, so that they fuse together on cooling to form the barrier. The cable is heated at the desired points by a pulsed high-frequency power unit, the plastic of the sheath and insulation acting as the dielectric between two stationary electrodes. In the embodiment described the plastic, which may or may not be the same for the sheath and conductor insulation, is P.V.C.
