Abstract
1,020,096. Liquid fuel atomizers. ESSO RESEARCH ENGINEERING CO. April 18, 1963 [June 4, 1962], No. 15339/63. Heading F4T. A liquid fuel burner comprises an ultrasonic fuel atomizer 21, 24, 23 driven by an electronic oscillator 55 and supplied with fuel by a pump 11 through a solenoid valve 17 only when the atomizer is being driven. When the oscillator 55 is energized by a thermostat 54 a coil 72 inductively coupled to the plate inductance 74 of the oscillator heats the heater of a delay switch 73 which closes to supply mains current to a controller 2. The latter then energizes (1) an ignition transformer 45 to cause arcing at electrodes 40, (2) an electric motor 1 to drive the fuel pump 11 and (3) the solenoid valve 17 which therefore opens to supply fuel via a pipe 15 and bores 81, 82 to the tip of the atomizer. If ignition occurs a photo-cell 43 sends a signal to the controller which then deenergizes the ignition transformer. If ignition fails the controller shuts down the burner, repeats the cycle, and then locks the system out if ignition again fails. The electric motor 1 also drives a blower 13 supplying combustion air to a blast tube 19 surrounding the atomizer and provided with vanes 49 and with an end cone 53. The air flow is adjusted by a manual valve. The atomizer is described in Specification 992,031. and comprises two aluminium stepped resonator units 21, 23 in base-to-base relationship with a piezo-electric disc 24, such as lead zirconium titanate, between them. A groove 30 is formed around the tip of resonator 21 to which the fuel is supplied and prevents the fuel from creeping back. A portion of the resonator 21 may be replaced by a disc 32 of stainless steel. A heat shield 33 is attached to the front of the resonator. The pump 11 may be a gear pump or a high torque pump and in the latter case the valve 17 is unnecessary but a centrifugal clutch is employed between the motor and the pump. The electronic oscillator 55 is described in Specification 977,939.
