Abstract

1,019,735. Cleaning bag filters. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. Sept. 18, 1962 [Sept. 27, 1961], No. 35521/62. Heading BIT. Outward flow filter bags 23, e.g. of fibrous glass material capable of resisting temperatures as high as 550 ‹F., are cleaned by reverse flow or the gas being filtered, the cleaning being further effected by so interrupting the subsequent resumed flow of the gas being filtered before the bags are fully inflated that the bags will reach their fully inflated position by virtue of their own inertia, thus producing fluttering of the bags. The bags are disposed in a housing 2 comprising a dirty gas inlet section 3, a bag section 4, a clean gas outlet section 5, a hopper section 6 and a damper section 7. The section 3 is divided into four separate compartments each having a dirty gas inlet 9 and a reverse gas flow outlet 11, and the section 5 has a clean gas outlet 10. The section 7 is provided with a damper 14 for each inlet 9 and a damper 16 for each outlet 11, the movement of the dampers being accomplished pneumatically under the control of an electrical circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), which comprises switches operated by cam timers so that the pairs of dampers associated with the compartments of the section 3 are operated successively. Blowers (not shown) are provided to move the dirty gas through the inlets 9 and the bags 23 to the outlet 10 and reverse flow of clean gas through the bags 23 and the reverse gas flow outlets 11. During normal flow of dirty gas through each compartment of section 3 the inlet 9 and outlet 11 associated with the compartment are open and closed, respectively. When the bags 23 associated with the compartment have to be cleaned the electrical circuit operates the dampers 14 and 16 to close the inlet 9 and open the outlet 11 which collapses the bags. After a given time the position of the dampers 14 and 16 are returned to normal but before the bags inflate fully the damper 14 is again moved to close the inlet 9. The damper 14 is subsequently moved to again open the inlet 9 and normal cleaning of the dirty gas then proceeds. The hopper section 6 is provided with a pair of rotary valves 12, 13 which are timed to open and close in a preselected manner in accordance with the bag cleaning operations.
