Abstract

1,019,296. Automatic volume control circuits. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSONHOUSTON. Nov. 15, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 43244/62. Heading H4R. In a gain control system the output signal of an amplifier is compared to a reference voltage and when the output signal exceeds the reference voltage the error signal is used to modify the value of one or more variable impedances in one or several stages of the amplifier so as to cause the gain thereof to be inversely proportional to the input signal when the output exceeds the reference voltage. Fig. 2 shows the preferred embodiment comprising an amplifier the output from which is applied, via a potentiometer P2, to a pair of back-to-back Zener diodes DZ1 and DZ2. Signal pulses corresponding to those parts of the signal exceeding the breakdown voltage of the Zener diodes are amplified in transistor TR3 and applied to the rectifier and filter circuit 5. The resultant D.C. is applied to the variable impedance circuit 6, which comprises a diode D2 supplied with a biasing current from Zener diode DZ, the current from D1 backing of the biasing current through D2 and thereby varying the impedance of diode D2. Since diode D2 is a shunt with the emitter impedance of transistor TR1 in the amplifier 1 the gain of the amplifier is varied and tends to maintain the output constant, once the signal voltage exceeds the reference. The control may be applied to a number of stages in an amplifier.
