Abstract

958,865. Transistor amplifier circuits and switching. AMERICAN DISTRICT TELEGRAPH CO. Sept. 4, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 33815/62. Heading H3T. [Also in Division G4] A low noise transistor amplifier used in an electrical protection system (see Division G4), has its input supplied via a transformer 44 to the base of the first of six NPN transistors 47- 52, the output being taken from the collector of transistor 52. The transistors are directly collector-base coupled, and each has a resistor 79-83 giving feedback from its collector to base. The overall amplifier is provided with negative feedback via a PNP transistor 74 and a resistor 53. To ensure that the amplifier gives greater amplification in the range 3- 10 kc/s., resistors 84, 85 and condenser 86. are included giving greater feedback at frequencies below 3 kc/s. and condenser 87 is included, giving greater feedback above 10 kc/s. The circuit may be energized from an A.C. supply through the rectifiers 61-64 stabilized by the Zener diode 65. Also included in the system is a unijunction transistor or double-based diode 99 (see Fig. 5), to the emitter of which is applied a voltage derived either from an integrator and differentiator circuit through a diode 96 or through a diode 103 from a low-gain wide band amplifier including the transistors 106, 112. The double-base diode conducts when the voltage between its emitter and base B1 exceeds a certain percentage (about 60) of the voltage between the two bases B1 and B2, and the coil 97 of a relay in the emitter circuit is then actuated so that an alarm signal may be given when the voltage input to the circuit exceeds a predetermined value. An alternative arrangement to this is described (Fig. 6, not shown), using a field effect transistor, with the relay coil in the collector circuit.
