A card index file wherein index cards are divided into sub-files by dividing walls 11 and the sub-files arranged in file sections between guide walls (not shown) is characterized in that the dividing walls carry index, tabs 18 and the index cards in each sub-file have first and second aligned notches 21, 22 in one of their edges. The notches 21 in one sub-file are in alignment with the notches 21 in all the other sub-files of the same file section. The notches 22 in the sub-files of the same file section are out of alignment. As shown, the index cards 12 are arranged in folders 10, the back wall of each folder having a projecting tab 13. The index cards in each folder are provided with stepped cut-away parts 19 visible through a cut-away portion 16 in the front wall of the folder. Each index card bears a reference numeral 20 and the word " out " just below the reference numeral to indicate the absence of the preceding card. The front wall of each folder bears indicia 15a, 15b adjacent a cut-away portion 14. In addition, an index tab 18 is secured to the front wall of the folder at the appropriate position along a fixed index 17 and may bear a reference numeral or letter on its projecting portion. The folders are arranged between guide cards carrying a like fixed index 17 to facilitate location of the required folder. The guide cards have projecting tabs along their upper edges.
