[Class 16.] A card index or file comprises record-receiving elements 9 such as cards or folders divided into groups by guide cards 5 according to an indexing system indicated by characters 7 on the tabs 6 of the guide cards 5, each guide card and its corresponding groups of folders 9 being provided with an area of the same colour so that by reference to a chart a particular folder 9 may be located either by its index character or by its colour. As shown, the tabs 6 of the guide cards 5 and the edges 16 of the tabs 15 are the coloured areas. The guide cards 5 may be subsidiary guide cards in an index including main guide cards 1 with uncoloured tabs 12. The tabs 12 may be coloured, however, and in this case the edges 16 of the tabs 15 have two coloured sections 17, 18, the section 17 being coloured the same as the corresponding tab 12 and the section 18 being coloured the same as the corresponding tab 6. The system of indexing employed and the colours corresponding thereto may be indicated on the guide cards or on separate charts. The guide cards may be arranged in alphabetic progression and the corresponding colours arranged in the order of the visible spectrum, and in this case a chart may not be necessary. The provision of coloured areas forms a check against incorrect filing.
