Abstract

A method for quenching metal or alloy, particularly ferrous metal such as steel or cast iron but including other metal such as aluminium, comprises contacting a heated metal or alloy e.g. at a temperature above its austenite start temperature, with an aqueous solution of a liquid water-soluble polyalkylene glycol, the water-solubility of which decreases as temperature increases. The glycol preferably contains oxyethylene and higher oxyalkylene units, e.g. oxybutylene or oxypropylene, and has a molecular weight of 600-40,000. The solution may comprise 0.1-30% polyalkylene glycol and 45-99.9% water, the remainder, if any, being corrosion protection additives such as nitrites, glucomates, phosphates, silicates, borates, or hydroxides, e.g. sodium nitrite and meta-borate.
