Abstract

A casing is made by compressing and sintering metallic powder and subjecting it to thermo-chemical treatment involving the diffusion of gases. The casing, for holding a blasting charge, comprises compressed and sintered pulverulent iron oxidized at 500 DEG C., reduced in ahydrogen atmosphere at 1040 DEG C. and case hardened in a carbon monoxide atmosphere at 900 DEG C. Other embodiments involve depthwise oxidation at 500 DEG C. or impregnation with 26% by weight of copper during the hydrogen treatment. The casings may additionally be impregnated with a plastics material. Reference is directed by the Comptroller to Specification 866,931.
