Abstract

A powder compact of copper or a copper base alloy is formed either by treating the powder with a nitrogen containing organic compound corrosion inhibitor and then compacting the powder or by compacting the untreated powder followed by impregnating with the corrosion inhibitor and finally compacting. The inhibitor specified is benzotriazole and in one example minus 100 mesh copper powder is roll compacted and sintered at 1000 DEG C. in hydrogen. The porous compact is then impregnated with a 5% aqueous solution of benzotriazole at 100 DEG C. and finally cold rolled to 50% reduction. In a further example the copper powder is heated with the benzotriazole prior to compaction. Benzotriazole vapour may also be used for treating the powder or compact.
