Abstract
Metallic powders are inactivated by coating with a heavy layer of oxide, of greater thickness than that formed by oxidation in air at ordinary temperature, and then impregnating with a fatty acid having more than ten carbon atoms in the molecule. Oxidation may be effected by means of an oxidising liquid by heating in a mixture of rare gas and oxygen, or by heating in air e.g. at 400 DEG -600 DEG C. for Al, at 300 DEG -400 DEG C. for Mg, or at 200 DEG -300 DEG C. for Zn; the oxidised powder may then be cooled in water and dried prior to impregnation. The acid may be stearic, palmitic or oleic and may be applied in organic solvents such as benzene and alcohol mixtures. The powder may be pickled before oxidation e.g. in aqueous nitric acid for Al, in ammonium chloride solution for Mg. or in oxalic acid solution for Zn.
