A squirrel cage motor having a star-connected stator winding is connected to a D.C. source Uo through an inverter comprising semi-conductor devices 1-6 for controlling the stator frequency. Power is returned from the stator winding to the source through diodes 19-24, choke 25, and diode 26. The return current is pulsed by triode 27 which is controlled to maintain the motor nux at an optimum value. The return circuit may include a transformer.
