The armature 1 of a D.C. motor is supplied with pulses during the starting period through saturable reactor 4 and controlled rectifiers 2, 3, associated with capacitor 5. When the starting operation is complete, a switch 7 closes automatically to short-circuit the elements 2-4. Control pulses are supplied to rectifiers 2, 3, and switch 7 by a multivibrator which is controlled by a signal from current transformer 9. The amplitude of the starting current is adjusted by resistor 12 connected to the control winding 10 of the saturable reactor. A smoothing diode 14 shunts the armature. Diode 15 and reactor 16 provide reliable cut-off of the controlled rectifiers. In another arrangement, an unloading resistor shunts the elements 2-4 during the starting period, the control winding of the saturable reactor being coupled to this resistor. In a further embodiment for controlling a threephase motor, a full-wave inverter using controlled rectifiers and phase reactors is inserted in the stator circuit, a diode being connected in series with the control winding of the saturable reactor.
