[Also in Division G3] A squirrel-cage induction motor 1 has a fourpole A.C. stator winding supplied through silicon-controlled rectifiers 2a-2c shunted by diodes 3a-3c, the triggering of the controlled rectifiers being phase-regulated in accordance with the deviation of the motor speed from a set value. A sixteen-pole stator winding is supplied with D.C. from transformer through controlled rectifiers 5a, 5b and diodes 6a, 6b, for braking. Trigger pulses are supplied to the rectifiers 5a, 56, from control unit 8, which, like the control unit 4, compares a reference voltage with the output of tachometer generator 9. If the speed of the motor is excessive, controlled rectifiers 2a-2c are blocked whilst the rectifiers 5a, 5b are triggered for braking. The motor may drive a lift, a deceleration programme being nitiated by closure of a contact in the lift shaft whereby a voltage varying with time is added to the tachometer voltage. This provides a steady reduction of speed. In another arrangement, the starting operation of the lift is time-controlled in a similar manner, the change-over between the acceleration and retardation programmes being effected smoothly by a diode selector circuit. The rotor is provided with high-resistance rods which are insulated to prevent transverse current between adjacent rods. This allows the motor to have a smooth, non-peaking, speed-torque characteristic for the braking operation.
