Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A temperature responsive telescopic device includes an elongated body 10, and a plunger 21 mounted to telescope relatively to one another, a spring 30 tending to extend the plunger from the body, a latch comprising a pin 23 on the plunger and a bayonet slot in the body 10 to hold the plunger retracted and a bimetallic strip 35 coiled about the body 10 and arranged to release the latch at a predetermined temperature. The device is intended for use in thermal overload cut-outs for electric heaters and the bimetallic strip 35 is positioned in a socket in contact with the temperature to be sensed. The head 22 of the plunger may then actuate the contacts of a cut-out. The plunger is shown in its extended position in Fig. 2 with the pin 23 in contact with a shoulder 13 formed in the bayonet slot in the body. The spring 30 besides acting as a compression spring acts as a torsion spring to twist the plunger relative to the body 10 so that if the plunger is pushed in, the pin 23 will engage behind a shoulder 15. The free end 38 of the bimetallic strip will push the pin clear of the shoulder 15 if the predetermined temperature is exceeded, the positioning of the bimetallic strip being adjustable by means of a screw 37.
