Apparatus for crimping and packaging yarn comprises a stuffer crimper, with a crimping tube 10 in which a compacted web of crimped yarn is formed, a can 20 having a peripheral wall 33 and a central sleeve 31 forming an annular space to receive the web as it is discharged, and a mechanism for advancing the can at a predetermined rate with respect to the feed of the yarn to the crimper so as to lay the web in a succession of convolutions in the can. In the embodiment shown yarn 11 passes from package 14 and gate tensioner 13 to a traversing guide 16 which feeds the yarn axially along feed rolls 12 of the tube 10 which is of rectangular cross-section. The compacted web 37 may be heated by a block 9. Fixed to the top of the tube is a plate 38 fitting into the annular cross-section of the can and having a slot, through which the web is pushed, and a helical surface to conform to the web as it is laid. The can, having a perforated sleeve 31, is removably connected to the support 25 which is rotated by motor 28 so that the can is retracted upwardly on the threaded rod 26, Fig. 5 (not shown), the apparatus is the reverse way up and a discharge tube 46 is pressed against a spherical socket 47 on the discharge end of the crimping tube 10a. Eccentrics 52, 53 give a rotary movement to the tube 46 so that the web is laid in the can as a series of almost wholly overlapping coils. The crimper is pivotally mounted so that a filled can can be removed. After the removal of the package it may have a steam or liquid treatment and may then be mounted, for dielectric heating between an axial electrode and an annular electrode, Fig. 9 (not shown). Alternatively the package may be dyed or hot liquid or steam forced through the package which may be confined in a fabric sleeve.
