Abstract
1,015,597. Practice ammunition. DYNAMIT NOBEL - GENSCHON G.m.b.H. July 23, 1962 [Aug. 12, 1961], No. 28168/62. Heading F3A. A dummy projectile for practice ammunition has a thermoplastic shell 10 made from an elastomeric material of high molecular weight the linkage of the molecules being such that it is destroyed by the frictional heat caused by the rifling when the cartridges are fired, so that the shell is weakened and ruptures when leaving the barrel. Suitable plastics are said to be natural and synthetic rubbers, polyethylene and poly-p-xylene and the shell may be formed by injection moulding, presure or extrusion moulding, and other processes. The shell, which may have a driving band 11, is filled with a dense, pulverulent material, which may be in the form of an emulsion. For this purpose, powdered manganese, barium sulphate, aluminium oxide, corundum or iron oxide may be mixed with silicone oil, paraffin, glycerine or saturated oleaginous polymerization products. Wad 15 is of elastic, foamed synthetic resin and the base of the projectile may have a dished closure bearing against wad 15.
