A modified Gauss objective has the diaphragm between two surfaces concave thereto and is characterized by the following.- (a) the front component is a compound meniscus concave to the second component and consisting of a collective element of refractive index n s and Abbe number n s cemented to a dispersive element of refractive index n z and Abbe number n z wherein and the sum of the refractive powers of the first component lies within the limits (b) the second component is a collective meniscus lens element convex to the front (c) the third component is a dispersive meniscus lens element concave to the diaphragm and having an axial thickness d 6 wherein (d) the diaphragm is between the third and fourth components (e) 0.3 f < r 6 < r 4 < r 1 < 5.0 f (f) d 3 + d 5 < 0.02 f (g) 0.4 f < 2r 7 < r 5 < 4. 0 f. Optical data are given for five examples in two of which the front compound component has the dispersive element in front.
