Abstract

1,014,244. Protecting sewage sludge beds. M. M. WARD. July 20, 1964 [May 6, 1963], No. 17780/63. Heading B1D. Sewage sludge beds 1 are protected in wet weather by inclined roofs 5, 6 mounted by wheels 7, 8 on tracks 9, 10 disposed along the bed length, the tracks extending beyond the bed to permit parking of the roofs clear of the bed in dry weather. Sliding or folding flap extensions shorten the roofs for parking purposes. A skirt member at each end of a roof may be provided to catch the wind when raised and to protect the bed from rain when lowered. Gas or electrical radiant heaters 26 may be disposed within the roofs which may carry adjustable louvers 24 or rotatable ventilation cowls to increase ventilation. The roofs are inclined so that the higher edges 11, 12 face the prevailing wind and the lower edges 13, 14 are near the bed. The bed base is of perforated concrete and a layer of clinker is laid on the base with the sludge disposed over the clinker. The roofs may be mounted by flanged wheels on a monorail above the bed.
