Abstract

A building block or unit has on at least one face a coating produced from a mixture of hydraulic binder, e.g. Portland cement or limestone, an aggregate, water and synthetic resin. The resin may be thermoplastic, thermosetting or cold-setting. Specified resins are vinyl resins, e.g. polyvinyl acetate plasticized with dibutyl phthalate, acrylic copolymers, e.g. a copolymer of butyl methacrylate and styrene. The block may be of lightweight aggregate material such as foam slag, or of pressed or laminated fibrous material or of foamed synthetic resin such as expanded polystyrene or polyurethane foam. To form the faced block, coating mixture is sprayed or extruded into a shallow tray or mould which is vibrated to remove entrained air, the block placed therein and the whole passed under a roller preset to control the thickness of the facing and block. The coating is allowed to set and the faced block removed from the tray. Heat is applied if the resin is thermosetting to cure the resin. In an alternative method the block is formed in the mould. The faced block may have a surfacing layer of synthetic resin or material the same as that of the coating. The coating may have a decorative or patterned surface or surfacing layer.
