Abstract

An ornamental surface is prepared from a mixture comprising an uncured thermosetting resin and a catalyst, solid chippings not less than 1/16 inch in size of either crushed marble, dolorite stone, brick, plastic or glass fibres, and fillers as fine as 325 mesh such as asbestos, slate, kaolin and silica. In the example a mixture of a polyester resin, a styrene monomer, a thixotropic resin, a flexible polyester resin, cobalt naphthenate and a methyl ethyl ketone catalyst is prepared, and white silica sand, beach sand and solid chippings of varied colours are added to the resin mixture. The mixture is applied to a prepared surface and allowed to set or it may be cast to form tiles or panels. The coated surface may be ground to expose the chippings and a final coating of a polyester resin is applied.
