Abstract

1415481 Epoxy resin coated mineral particles BRITISH INDUSTRIAL SAND LTD 21 Feb 1974 8053/74 Heading B2E Dry, free-flowing, natural mineral particles, e.g. of quartzite, crushed rock, quartz sand or cristabalite sand, preferably in the size range 0.07 to 1.5 mm, are individually coated with 0.3-1.0% cured epoxy resin and may be produced by heating the mineral particles to between 120‹C and 200‹C and mixing with a curable epoxy resin and optionally with between 0.1 and 1% of a lightfast pigment which is stable at the curing temperature and which does not prevent curing, adding a curing agent and continuing mixing until curing is complete. Specified pigments are those based on the oxides of Fe, Co, Cr, Ti, Zn, Ni and Sb or a phthalocyanine. Two or more different coloured aggregates of coated mineral particles may be bonded together with a resin binder to give a multicoloured surface coating, e.g. a concrete floor. The coated particles may be used for surface dressings, toppings, coloured tiles and decorative sand for advertising and artistic work.
