Abstract

An article formed from thermoplastic plastics material and reinforced with glass fibres and synthetic resin is produced by applying glass fibres to a heat-softened surface of an article of thermoplastic plastics material so that the glass fibres adjacent the surface of the article become embedded therein, cooling the glass fibre coated article, applying hardenable synthetic resin to the glass fibres of the coated article and curing the synthetic resin. The article may be a web, plate or a moulded component. The thermoplastics material may be polyvinyl chloride. The surface of an already formed article may be preheated before the application of the glass fibres, or they may be applied whilst the surface is still soft as a result of the forming operation. A web like article may be formed by extrusion and combined immediately with a glass fibres mat or fleece, e.g. by introducing the article after it has left the extruder between two moving glass fibre mats or fleeces. Pressure may be used to assist the anchoring of the glass fibres, e.g. by passing the combined web and glass fibre mat or fleece through one or more adjustable pressure rollers. Alternatively a layer of glass fibres may be introduced between two articles which are simultaneously united to the glass fibre layer and then separated such that separation occurs in the glass fibre layer. The sandwich structure may be formed continuously. The hardenable synthetic resin may be a polyester or epoxide resin and may be applied immediately after the formation of the glass fibre coated article or subsequently. Additional glass fibres may be applied with the hardenable synthetic resin. The products may be used for constructional or building purposes.
