Abstract
1,012,957. Laundry sheet feeding apparatus. McGRAW-EDISON CO. April 8, 1963 [April 17, 1962], No. 13834/63. Heading D1A. [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for feeding a sheet or the like to an ironer comprises a pair of swingable members 23, 24 pivoted at the left-hand input end of the apparatus as shown in figure 1 by means of universal joints on the ends of a driving shaft 25 for driving conveyer chains 32 having grippers 106-108 carried on the members 23, 24. These members 23, 24 each comprise a horizontal arm 28 and a vertical part 29 and are supported intermediate their length by casters 35 running on a track 37. They are biased apart by springs 56, 57 in a damping cylinder 50 acting through a cord and pulley system 46-49 on one member, on equal and opposite movement being conveyed to the other member by another cord and pulley system 38, 39. The grippers 106-108 comprise strips-secured at one end to the chains so that they open when passing around the sprockets 27, 30, 31 but are closed elseqhere and co-operate with a microswitch 109 to stop the conveyer chains momentarily with one gripper at position 106 open. Whilst the chains are stopped an operator inserts the corners of the leading edge of the sheet in the grippers 106. The conveyer chains then restart and carry the sheet along under the lower runs of the chains and spreading it whilst so doing against the tension of springs 56, 57 acting on the arms 28. The sheets are drawn across a wire lattice 144 and billowed out by air from a blower 113 and delivered on to a transfer roll assembly 73-77 driven by belts from a motor 88, this operation being assisted by air from another blower 114. The rolls 73-77 are provided with spiral beads so that a friction drag is provided tending to spread the trailing portion of the sheet. When the grippers 106 reach the sprocket 31 at the delivery end of the apparatus the sheet is released and delivered by the transfer rolls on to conveyer tapes 80 of the ironer. Roll 75 is arranged to rotate reversely and acts to apply friction drag after the leading edge of the sheet has been gripped by a doffer roll 81 on conveyor 80. Alternatively, raising of roll 75 by the operator can divert a torn or defective sheet downwards between rolls 74 and 75 and away from the ironer.
