Abstract

353,772. Feeding webs. BRITISHAMERICAN LAUNDRY MACHINERY CO., Ltd., Underhill Street, Camden Town, London.-(American Laundry Machinery Co. ; Norwood Station, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 27, 1930, No. 28999. [Class 100 (i).] Mechanism for feeding flat work to ironing- machines and which during feeding exerts a lateral stretching action on the work comprises upper and lower sets of endless bands 38, 26 between which the work is passed. Each set of bands comprises one or more central bands C<1>, C which travel in the direction of feed and a group of bands arranged on each side of the central band. The individual members of each group may diverge fanwise from one another and from the direction of feed or, as shown, may be parallel to one another but which as a group diverge from the direction of feed. The lower bands, which are of V form, pass around an adjustably-mounted front roller 27 and a circumferentially grooved roller 25 arranged adjacent to the ironing machine. To provide for the divergence of the bands, those immediately adjacent the straight central band C are made shorter than the others and pass around an intermediate roller 28. The upper bands pass over rollers 36, 37 having inclined axes, and the central band C<1 >of the upper series is made shorter than the others and passes over an intermediate roller 39. The guide rollers of the upper bands are carried by a framework 33 pivoted at 34 for movement in a vertical plane, and a weighted roller 40 is carried by the framework for pressing the upper bands upon the work. The lower bands are positively driven from the motor driving the ironing-machine and the upper bands are frictionally driven. The front of the frame 33 carries a contact member forming part of the motor circuit so that if the frame rises unduly owing to the passage of the operator's hand or of too thick a batch of work the circuit is broken. The ironing roller may rotate at a faster rate than the feeding belts deliver so that a longitudinal stretch also is imparted to the work. Alternatively or additionally transverse rollers rotating at a different speed from that of the feeding belts may be arranged before or behind the belts for applying a longitudinal stretch to the work.
