Abstract

The invention relates to stranding apparatus of the kind in which a revolving head carrier the supply spook and in which the wires from the spool are brought together about a core wire in a closing die and wrapped helically to form a strand of a plurality of layers. According to the invention the apparatus is characterized by one or more pain of opposed strand-reducing rolls on the outlet side of the closing die for compacting the strand radially, and driving means for positively rotating the reducing rolls to supply the sole tractive force for pulling the wires from the head through the closing die. The rolls may be driven through infinitely variable speed changing means and then in preferably a plurality of said pairs of reducing rolls disposed in different planes. The rolls are grooved, their spacing is adjustable and they are driven through slip clutches.
