In a refuse-collecting vehicle in which refuse is transferred from a receiving section 4 through an opening 8 beneath a wall 6 into the main body section 2 by an hydraulicallyactuated plunger 10 in a housing 12, bearing members 16 are e secured to a transverse bar 18 mounted just below the lower edge of the wall 6. The tearing members are in the form of scolloped plates which act to tear large articles of refuse, such as cardboard cartons or paper sacks, during passage of the refuse from the receiving section 4 to the main body section 2.
