Abstract

1,011,725. Vehicle roof racks. R. K. JONES. Oct. 11, 1962 [Oct. 18, 1961], No. 37300/61. Heading B7J. A luggage container 1 having a hinged lid 4 and made, e.g. of reinforced polyester resin is releasably secured to an automobile roof 2 by means of hooks 7 engaging the roof gutters 8 and having fixed thereto shanks 9 which pass through the side walls 3 of the container, the inner threaded ends of the shanks at one side of the container receiving hexagon-shaped nuts 11 and the inner threaded ends of the shanks on the opposite side receiving wing- nuts 10. The base 5 of the container is shaped to conform to the curvature of the roof and makes contact therewith over substantially its full area. In an alternative construction the base is formed with parallel ribs which bear on the roof. According to a further arrangement, hooks which engage the gutters 8 are interconnected within the container by a strap, the length of which is adjustable.
