Abstract

Sizes applied to synthetic polymeric filaments in the form of aqueous dispersions comprise: (a) a mixture of a vinyl chloride/butylacrylate copolymer and a vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile/vinyl acetate copolymer, (b) a vinyl chloride / isooctylacrylate / methyl acrylamide copolymer, (c) a vinyl chloride/butylacrylate/vinylacetate copolymer and as thickener polyvinylacetate, (d) a vinyl chloride/butylacrylate/acrylic acid copolymer adjusted in pH value with triethanolamine and as thickener polyvinyl alcohol, (e) a vinyl chloride/isooctylacrylate/maleic acid butyl semi-ester copolymer, (f) a vinyl chloride/crotanic acid octyl ester/acrylic acid butyl ester/crotanic acid copolymer adjusted in pH value with triethanolamine, (g) an acrylamide / vinyl acetate / vinyl chloride/butylacrylate copolymer, (h) an acrylic acid butyl ester/vinyl acetate/acrylic acid/styrene copolymer adjusted in a pH value with triethanolamine, (i) a vinyl propionate/propyl acrylate/maleic acid diethyl ester/crotonic acid copolymer adjusted in pH value with triethanolamine, (j) a methyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer or (k) a methylacrylate/ethylacrylate/crotonic acid copolymer.ALSO:Endless filaments made from synthetic polymeric materials, e.g. polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyolefins, polyvinylalcohol, copolymers or co-condensates or block polymers or block condensates, are sized by treating them with an aqueous dispersion of a film-forming water-insoluble polymer or copolymer made from vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid amide, acrylic acid amide, a methacrylic acid ester, an acrylic acid ester, a crotonic acid ester, styrene, vinylidene chloride, a maleic acid ester or a vinyl ester, which in the case of a copolymer may also contain up to a total of 3% by weight of one or more of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, crotonic acid, a maleic acid semi-ester or maleic acid, and then drying them before they reach the draw-off device. The sizing compositions may also contain ammonia, triethanol amine and heat stabilizers, e.g. organo-tin compounds, organolead compounds and amines. The sizing composition may be applied to the freshly spun filaments before they are drawn or it may be applied after predrawing before afterdrawing, between after-drawing and shrinking or after drawing and shrinking before being spooled on a bobbin. The filaments may be passed tangentially over an applicator roll covered with a textile, plastic or ceramic material which rotates either in the same or in the opposite direction of filament passage and which is immersed in the sizing composition in a pan. Alternatively the filaments may be passed at first over a roller immersed in the sizing composition and then tangentially below a roller which presses against a second roller which rotates in the sizing composition. Grooved rollers may be used. Static charging when the filaments are passed over guide rollers may be prevented by wetting the filaments after sizing and drying with water containing a small quantity of a surface-active agent, e.g. polyethenoxylated fatty acids, fatty alcohols, amines or amides. The filaments may subsequently be made into fabrics and coated with polyvinyl chloride, polyurethanes, polychlorobutadiene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene or natural rubber.ALSO:Endless filaments made from synthetic polymeric materials, e.g. polyamides, poleysters, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyolefins, polyvinyl alcohol, copolymers or co-condensates or block polymers or block condensates, which have been sized with polymers or copolymers made from vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid amide, acrylic acid amide, methacrylic acid esters, acrylic acid esters, crotonic acid esters, styrene, vinylidene chloride, maleic acid esters or vinyl esters which in the case of copolymers may also contain up to a total of 3% by weight of one or more of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, crotonic acid, a maleic acid semi-ester or maleic acid, are made into fabrics and coated with polyvinyl chloride, polyurethanes, polychlorobutadiene, polyisoprene, polybutadiene or natural rubber.
