Abstract

The operation of sizing is combined with that of the production of artificial threads or yarns of cellulose acetates or other derivatives of cellulose by the dry or evaporative method, by applying the sizing or adhesive dressing to the threads of associated filaments in their travel to the winding devices. The threads may be twisted before winding, or twisting and winding may proceed simultaneously as by the use of cap-spinning devices. The threads may be used as warp threads in weaving or knitting, or for the weft. For applying the dressing, the threads may pass in contact with suitably moistened rollers, rods, pads, &c., or through a bath of the dressing, or the latter may be sprayed on to the threads. The dressing may consist of solutions or emulsions containing gelatine (with or without olive or other oils), albumen, starch, dextrin, gums or resins in oil or other solvents; substances soluble in water or a volatile solvent are preferred.
