Abstract

Surface coating compositions are made by mixing a solution of a copolymer derived from a major proportion of an acrylic or methacrylic ester and a minor proportion of an ethylenic alcohol with a solution of a polyisocyanate in a liquid which, with the solvent of the resin solution, constitutes a surface coating vehicle. The examples describe adding an ethyl acetate solution of a trimethylol propane(toluene diisocyanate adduct to a toluene/butyl acetate solution of: (1) a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and propylene glycol monomethacrylate, and (2) a copolymer of ethyl acrylate methyl methacrylate and propylene glycol monomethacrylate. The resulting mixtures gelled. Also described is the preparation of the above copolymers by solution polymerization of the monomers in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
