Abstract
Insulating material consists of an asbestos fabric impregnated with a cement formed by mixing a micaceous powder with a solution of phosphoric acid. The powder may be of phlogopite or muscovite mica. Use of the treated fabric in tape form for the main wall insulation of a coil of a dynamo-electric machine is described, used with a mica tape or mica flakes to increase the dielectric strength and maintain the insulation level in a damp atmosphere. The mica tape may be in the form of one or more layers of micafolium tape having an asbestos fabric base with mica flakes built up thereon using silicone varnish. The asbestos tape may be applied over the micafolium tape with some of the micaceous cement applied between the layers, the assembly is then heated to 400 DEG C. at which temperature the cement becomes cured and bonds the layers together.
