Abstract

Rubber-like products are prepared by reacting, in presence of aliphatic hydrocarbon and aqueous alcohol at temperatures not exceeding 90 DEG C. and under alkaline condition, cyclic ketones, with aldehydes and polybutadiene, or an emulsion polymerized copolymer of butadiene and styrene. Examples use methyl cyclohexanone, aqueous formaldehyde, caustic soda, methanol and white spirit together with (1), (3) polybutadiene, and (2), an emulsion polymerized copolymer of butadiene and 40% styrene. After reaction, the mixture is distilled, the alkaline lower layer separated, the resin layer washed with acids neutralized and freed from solvents to yield rubber-like products soluble in usual solvents and compatible with usual film-forming agents, e.g. nitrocellulose, and with oils, greases and waxes.
