Dehydrolinalool is liberated from its alcoholate contained in a reaction mixture resulting from the ethynylation of 2-methylhept-2-en-6- one in the presence of an alkali metal base and a substituted amide solvent, by treating the reaction mixture with 2-10 mole of water per gram atom of alkali metal present, and separating the alkaline aqueous phase from the organic phase containing the dehydrolinalool.
