Abstract

A circular knitting machine has jacks selected by electromagnetic means which act selectively on swingable members of a pattern wheel. The pattern wheel comprises bars 4 which engage the needle cylinder to rotate the wheel therewith, jacks 5 radially slidable, when selected, by auxiliary jacks 6 engagable with the jacks 5 by swingable springs 7 and reciprocated by stationary cams K3. Each auxiliary jack (see Fig.2) has a foot 6h engaged by cams K 3 and is rockable about its lower edge to engage its bent section 6c with either the foot 5a (see Fig. 8) of jack 5 to connect it with the latter for withdrawal only or with notch 5b or 5c to connect it for movement in either direction. Cams K 1 , K 2 engage the ends of springs 7 except at a gap G where the ends pass between pole faces 8a, 8b of upper control and holding electromagnets and the pole face 9 of a lower electromagnet, (see Fig. 9). As each spring approaches the gap G the corresponding jack is positioned with section 6c above and between notches 5b 5c in withdrawn jacks 5. The spring is held in its raised position or falls into the field of magnet 9 according to whether control magnet 8a is or is not energized. A spring in the raised position is raised over the upper edge of K 2 , the lowered springs passing along the lower edge of the cam. Cams K 3 withdraw the auxiliary jacks until section 6c abuts the foot 5b when the auxiliary jacks associated with lowered springs 7 are moved, as the springs pass under cam K 2 , to engage their sections 6c with notches 5b. At the section 'M' each auxiliary jack moves outwardly, those selected by lowered springs carrying their jacks with them. At section 'N' auxiliary jacks still in the 'raised' position are depressed by cam K 4 to engage their sections 6c in notches 5c to locate the appropriate jack in its inoperative position and cam K 2 returns the springs to their intermediate position. At section 'B' cam K 1 raises all the springs, the auxiliary cams are lifted from notches 5b, 5c and at section 'C' cams K 3 first withdraw the auxiliary jacks and as parts 6c, 5a abut, the advanced jacks, and at section 'E' advance the auxiliary jacks to place section 6c above and between notches 5b, 5c as before.
