Abstract

A quench-hardened casting of a Mg-Al-Zn alloy is produced by subjecting a casting made from an alloy containing 8.3-8.7% Al, 1.4-1.6% Zn, 0-0.3% Mn, 0-0.7% Cu, remainder Mg and impurities, to homogenization by heating in stages from 380-420 DEG C., the heating at 420 DEG C. being continued e.g. for 8 or 16 hours until the precipitates in the casting of an intermetallic compound Mg-Al-Zn are brought into solution, quenching either in air or a liquid medium such as water or oil to between room temperature and 120 DEG C., and annealing preferably at 170-190 DEG C. The casting may be cooled from the highest homogenizing temperature of 420 DEG C. by not more than 40 DEG C., preferably in the homogenizing air-circulating oven, to at least 380 DEG C. and equalized at this temperature prior to quenching. Prior to casting, the melt may be grain-reduced at 750 DEG C. with C2Cl6. Prior alloys are disclosed as follows: (a) 9.5-10.5% Al, 0.2-0.6% Zn, 0.2-0.5% Mn, 0.2% max. Si, 0.15% max. Cu, balance Mg; (b) 8.3-9.7% Al, 1.6-2.4% Zn, 0.1% Mn, 0.3% max. Si, 0.05% max. Cu, 0.01% max. Ni, balance Mg.
