Abstract
L-Glutamic acid is prepared by a semi-continuous fermentation in which a culture medium containing L-glutamic acid producing bacteria, in which medium the growth rate of the bacteria has begun to fall and the concentration of cells has almost reached its highest stationary value, is divided into two or more portions, each divided medium is supplemented with a further amount of a nutrient medium and is incubated to produce L-glutamic acid. Alternatively, one of the divided portions at each division is cultured until it reaches the cell concentration of the initial division stage, when further division and supplementation with nutrient medium takes place, again one portion being cultured to the highest stationary value stage to provide a medium which may be further divided, while the other portions are incubated to produce glutamic acid. Specified fermentation bacteria are Brevibacterium lacto-fermentum ATCC, Nos, 2256 and 14067. Specifications 873,448, 876,943, 889,187 and 905,973 are referred to.
