Abstract

1,132,855. L-Glutamic acid. AJINOMOTO CO. Inc. 15 Nov., 1965 [24 Nov., 1964; 9 July, 1965], No. 48343/65. Heading C2C. L-Glutamic acid is prepared by a two-stage process in which an L-glutamic acid producing bacterium is first cultivated in a medium containing growth promoting substance in an amount of more than the sub-optimum amount for bacterial growth (i.e. an amount higher than that which gives rise to L-glutamic acid production), whereby a seed culture is obtained in which the bacterial cells include the growth promoting substance in more than the specific amount for growth control (i.e. the amount of growth promoter present in the cells when bacterial growth substantially ceases and L- glutamic acid production takes place), and the resulting seed culture is then added to a main culture medium which either contains no growth promoting substance or contains such substance in conjunction with a growth control agent, whereby L-glutamic acid production takes place when the growth promoter content of the bacterial cells falls to the specific amount for growth control and continues while such specific amount is maintained.
