Abstract

1,008,617. Rotary filter. I. WALLQUIST. June 22, 1964, No. 25687/64. Heading B1D. The cylindrical surface of a drum 3 comprises coarse filter cloth and the drum rotates in a basin 1, filtration of liquid delivered to inside the drum being effected by solids carried in the liquid and forming a layer on the cloth. The solids may be those contained in the turbid liquid or cellulose fibres added thereto. Liquid enters drum 3 down shaft 4, on which drum 3 rotates, and through openings 7. Liquid which has passed through drum portion x, where the solid layer is thin and filtration poor, is diverted by partition 26 into space 15, from which it is pumped back to the drum inlet, Fig. 4 (not shown). Liquid passed through region y, where the solid layer is thick and filtration good, is similarly diverted to space 19 and is then used by sprays 21, 22 to backwash the drum, most of the solid entering funnel 8 but some (spray 22) re-entering the liquid in the drum, where it is needed to quickly build up a layer at portion x. The bulk of filtered liquid leaves basin 1 by valve 11, which is controlled by a float 12 in the drum to maintain a constant level. Partitions 26, 27 are suspended from floats 30, 31. In Fig. 1, not shown, the partitions are replaced by shields extending to the drum surface. The drum may be backwashed using air, and the best filtered liquid, from space 19, used for other purposes.
