Abstract

1,007,977. Laminates. MARGLASS Ltd. March 5, 1963 [March 6, 1962], No. 8536/62. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises a woven or knitted glass fabric and a fabric of parallel glass filaments or threads bonded together with a thermosetting resin, e.g. an epoxy resin. A backing fabric of woven or knitted glass yarn may be bonded to one or both sides of the laminate. Layers of the backed material may be superposed and hot-pressed in a mould to form a shaped product. The component layers of the laminate may be heat- or solventcleaned and pretreated with an organo-silane or -chrome complex to improve adhesion. In examples: (a) a woven glass fabric was immersed in a solution of an epoxy resin in acetone, dried, contacted between rollers with a sheet of parallel glass yarns, and backed on one or both sides with a woven glass fabric; layers of the product were stacked and moulded under pressure to cure the resin, (b) layers as in (a) were passed together through an acetone solution of the resin, pressed and dried, and treated as in (a).
