Abstract
1447537 Laminates W H SEEMANN 15 Nov 1973 53125/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A composite material comprises two porous plies 11 and 12 between which is sandwiched a series of resilient elongate elements 13 formed from plastics or resinous material, said elements being parallel to and spaced apart from each other and each being bonded to the plies, the plies being sufficiently pliable to permit displacement of the elements towards one another into the spaces between adjacent elements, and to permit limited longitudinal displacement of the elements relative to one another, so that the sheet material can cover and assume the shape of a compound-curved structure. The plies may each comprise a woven or non woven fabric as a porous film, and, in the embodiment shown, each ply comprises warp yarns 11 1 , 12 1 and filler yarns 11 2 , 12 2 , e.g. of glass, cotton, rayon, nylon, polyester, acetate or wool. The elements may be made of polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, cellulose aceto butyrate or ethyl cellulose. In a preferred embodiment, the elements 13 are made by dipping or impregnating yarns, e.g. glass rovings with a resin, e.g. an epoxy, polyester, phenolic or melamine-aldehyde resin. Textile fibres 14, e.g. yarns or rovings of glass, carbon, graphite or boron may be placed in the spaces between the elements 13. The composite sheet material may be made by directing a series 15 1 , 15 2 , 15 3 of fibres through a resin bath 18 to impregnate the fibres, bringing the impregnated fibres into parallel relationship at comb 20, applying the plies 23, 24 to opposite sides of the parallel fibres and applying heat and pressure between two heated release coated plates or belts 27, 28 to cure the resin and bond the elements to the plies, parallel rovings 21 fed from comb 30 being optionally alternated with the elements. The composite elements of the invention may be applied to a boat frame.
