Abstract

1327931 Laminates PERMALI Ltd 24 Sept 1970 [26 June 1969] 32455/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A laminate comprises a plurality of superimposed sheets, each sheet having a layer of bulked glass or carbon fibre yarns or rovings bonded by resin. The yarns may be continuous twisted or untwisted filaments and may be bulked by subjecting the yarn to a transverse blast of air while simultaneously causing it to vibrate lightly against a support such as a wire screen, or by needling a web of parallel yarns. The resin is said to preferably have thermoplastic properties as it is applied i.e. to be thermoplastic or a partially cured thermosetting resin. An array of bulked yarns may be drawn from a drum or from a row of bobbins, passed through a comb and through constant tension devices then through a resin bath. Excess resin is removed by wiping and/or squeeze rollers. The resin may be thermoplastic, or an epoxy, polyester phenolic; silicone or melamine resin which is partially cured to a thermoplastic state, e.g. a B-stage epoxy resin. The resin may be a liquid, dissolved in a solvent, or a fluidized bed of powder. The impregnated web is heated to remove the solvent and/or further cure the resin. The transverse strength of the web may be enhanced by passing the hot web through force-cooled punch rollers. The impregnated web of parallel bulked yarn may be brought into contact with an impregnated supporting sheet, e.g. a woven fabric, fibrous sheet or plastics sheet. Alternatively the two layers may be brought into contact before impregnation. In these cases the parallel yarns need not be contiguous. A stack of such one or two layer webs may be laminated together in a pre-heated press, with additional heating to cure the resin. Preferably different layers have the yarns orientated in different directions.
